Key Features and Construction

  • Material: Constructed from steel sheet that has already been coated with zinc at the mill.

  • Coating Process (Pre-Galvanization): The steel coil or sheet is passed through a molten zinc bath, or coated using an electro-galvanization process, before the tray components are cut, punched, and formed.

    • This is also commonly referred to as mill-galvanized or G90 steel.

  • Corrosion Resistance: The zinc coating provides good protection against rust in dry, indoor, and less aggressive environments.

  • Structure: Like other trays, it can be manufactured in different styles, most commonly:

    • Perforated/Ventilated: Features holes in the base for cable cooling and fastening.

    • Ladder: Has rungs for maximum airflow and is suited for heavy loads.

  • Cut Edge Vulnerability: The major limitation is that the cut edges (where the steel is sheared, punched, or slit) have no zinc coating, leaving the base steel exposed. However, the zinc adjacent to the cut tends to provide some sacrificial protection to the exposed edges.

Pre G.I. cable trays are a cost-effective choice for general-purpose applications where the environment is stable and non-corrosive.

  • Cost-Effectiveness: They are typically less expensive than trays finished with Hot-Dip Galvanization or Stainless Steel.

    • Data centers and clean rooms (where hot-dip residue is unwanted).

    • Light manufacturing areas.
